“The cost of inaction is the status quo. If you’re ok where you are, then you don’t need to do anything. But if you want to get to the next level, you need to understand the cost of doing nothing. Action is expensive, but inaction costs a fortune.”

I love origin stories. I think a lot of us do. Don’t you?

Most of us know Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin. Taylor Swift fans know how heartbreak launched her songwriting career (and arguably extended it). Michael Jordan fans know he was cut from his high school basketball team. Superman fans know he was sent to earth because his home planet of Krypton was going to explode. Think about it. How many origin stories do you know?

Have you seen the new documentary about Arnold Schwarzenegger on Netflix? Most of us know he was an immigrant who became a bodybuilding champion then made it in the movies to become a superstar.

In the documentary, we learn that he had an abusive alcoholic father. We discover he was the second son, and he competed with his older brother for his father’s approval and never got it.  He joined a small group of physical fitness buffs and committed to charting a course to freedom in America.

Arnold could have accepted the status quo. He could have done nothing. Imagine if he’d chosen to accept his fate.

And how about us? There are so many reasons to do nothing. It’s too hard. The result isn’t exactly what we want. Nobody else is doing it. We can keep making excuses or we can make a difference.

Change is made by people who show up. Let’s show up and write the origin story of turning Illinois around, together.
